Description
The YZF-R1 (R1) belongs to an open class sports bike. The model has been manufactured by Yamaha Motor Company since 1998.
History of the Yamaha R1
Yamaha started producing the R1 bike in 1998 after they managed to redesign the Genesis engine. The first R1 motorcycle was one of the pioneers from the 1000cc class. Japanese competitors had designed 900cc models in the 1990s. This allowed enjoying the best compromise between power and weight. Yamaha decided that no compromise would be made, and the development team got the task to create the R1 bike. It had to have the lowest weight, the highest power, and the most compact dimensions. It was quite a challenging task, but engineers from Yamaha managed to design a new 998cc engine. It came with a five-valve design, big-bore 40mm downdraft carburetors and the EXUP system for better midrange.
The engine of the Yamaha R1 motorbike came with a revolutionary tri-axis design without the drive shaft, crankshaft, and the main shaft arranged in a horizontal line. Instead of it, the new Yamaha bike came with a triangular layout, which decreased the dimensions of the engine. This allowed adding a short wheelbase for excellent handling a well as a long swingarm needed for stability and traction. Such a layout structure of the Yamaha R1 is still quite popular, and many other motorcycle manufacturers follow it.
The electrical instrument panel included a self-diagnosis system as well as digital speed readout. Thanks to an EXUP valve used by the exhaust system of the R1, engine power production was maximized. Generally, the developers did a job great by developing this 1000cc model. On one of the websites, 1999 Yamaha R1 was rated 74.8 out of 100, which is very good. The original model was produced up to 1999. Today, the model of this motorbike is available for sale, but its price depends on its condition and features.
